Incheon National University's Department of Marine Science(Director: Professor Kim Jang-kyun) announced that it has successfully operated the Marine Ecosystem Global Education Program using Environmental DNA (eDNA) as part of the INU-Careup Program in conjunction with William & Mary University in the United States from January 5 to 18, 2025.

Cooperation with William & Mary University

William & Mary University, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, U.S., was established in 1693, and is a prestigious university that values academic diversity and critical thinking based on Liberal Arts Education. Fifteen undergraduate students from William & Mary University, a teaching assistant (TA), and a teacher participated in this program to conduct in-depth academic exchanges on marine molecular ecology research.

program content and learning process

Under the theme of marine biodiversity research using environmental DNA technology, this program provided a curriculum ranging from theoretical learning to field training, and students experienced the entire research process for two weeks, including environmental DNA sampling, how to use experimental tools, data analysis, and presentation of results. In particular, not only academic cooperation but also cultural exchanges were actively conducted through the buddy system in which Korean and American students matched 1:1 and teamwork in groups of six.

In addition, students visited the National Marine Biological Resources Center in Seocheon, learned about biological sample management and research trends, conducted sample collection practice on mudflats, and shared their academic backgrounds by introducing students from William & Mary University to the campus of Incheon National University and Korea's academic and cultural environment.

Global talent growth and cultural exchange

Outside of study, he toured major Korean attractions such as Wolmido, Hongdae, Bukhansan, Gyeongbokgung, and Namsan, building friendships and expanding cultural understanding between students from the two countries, while exchanging practical information on career design and exchange student programs.

achievements and visions

This program not only provided participating students with the opportunity to cultivate academic growth and international sense of environmental DNA technology at the same time, but also provided a place for improving their English skills and global networking, which served as an opportunity for students to grow into global talents.

Incheon National University's Department of Marine Science plans to continue its efforts to provide students with a wide range of learning opportunities and career support and to cultivate globally competitive talents.
